Proton Calendar
Proton Calendar
A calendar is a record of your life and contacts, and it contains some of your most sensitive online data. With Proton Calendar, all of an event’s critical information, like title, description, location, and attendees, are stored securely and privately with end-to-end encryption. Not even Proton can read your event details.

Understanding privacy conscious users
Proton aimed to expand beyond secure email into a full privacy first productivity suite. My role was twofold: design Proton Calendar from scratch and establish a cohesive design language that unified ProtonMail, Proton Calendar, and the upcoming Proton Drive while staying true to Proton’s core values of simplicity, security, and privacy.

Designing for usability and encryption
Through market research and user interviews, I identified key priorities: intuitive event creation, seamless multi-calendar management, and strong encryption without added complexity. A minimalist interface with color coded calendars kept navigation simple while reinforcing Proton’s clean aesthetic.

TOKENS
To make designs adaptable and easy to manage, I use tokens for design elements like radii, sizes, and spacing. This is crucial for a fully responsive design system, as it allows components to automatically adjust to different screen sizes and layouts.

Iterating for a seamless experience
I collaborated closely with Proton’s engineering team to refine the UI for both desktop and mobile, ensuring encryption was seamlessly integrated without compromising performance. Continuous testing with beta users helped fine tune event creation, multi-calendar management, and overall usability.

Outcome
The final design delivered a secure, user-friendly calendar that seamlessly integrated with ProtonMail. Users praised its simplicity, intuitive event management, and clear differentiation from mainstream alternatives—solidifying Proton Calendar as a leading privacy-first productivity tool.
